Gastric Sleeve Weight Loss Timeline, Chart 2024
What You Can Expect!
gastric sleeve surgery is an effective way for obese people to lose weight and keep it off over the long term. Studies have shown that gastric sleeve surgery is successful in both the short and long term. Associated illnesses disappear within one or two years of the weight-loss operation.
A Swiss study showed that patients retained at least 57% of their excess weight five years after the operation. Long-term success shows a significant reduction in the risk of stroke or heart disease, and a reduction in many obesity-related diseases.
Expected weight loss after gastric sleeve
Here’s a graph of average weight loss in sleeves at 3, 6, 9, 12, 18 and 24 months. Many factors can influence your weight loss results after gastric sleeve surgery. These include initial weight, diet, lifestyle, age, race, health problems and the surgeon’s skill.
Expected Rate of Weight Loss in 3 Months
After the operation, you will follow your diet and gradually switch from liquid to solid foods. You can therefore expect rapid weight loss in the first three months after surgery. On average, you can lose 25 to 35%* of your excess weight, or 30 to 40 kg.
Expected Rate of Weight Loss in 6 Months
At this stage, weight loss continues, but at a slower pace. You can expect to lose around 45-55% of excess weight within 6 months of bariatric surgery. This corresponds to an average of 1 to 2 kg per week.
Expected Rate of Weight Loss in 1 Year
One year after sleeve surgery, patients generally lose 65-70%* of their excess weight. They should be close to their target weight, but not everyone loses all their excess weight at this stage.
Expected Rate of Weight Loss in 18 Months
Weight loss should stabilize within a year and a half of surgery. In general, you can expect to lose 70% to 80%* or more of your body weight in 18 months.
Long-Term Expected Weight Loss
The U.S. National Library of Medicine has studied the long-term success of gastric sleeve in maintaining weight loss in patients. These studies looked at the results obtained by patients five years after the operation. They looked at overall weight loss, rate of weight loss, quality of life and complications.
Patients were followed up one, two and three years after bariatric surgery. The long-term weight loss curve of patients who underwent vertical sleeve gastrectomy was significantly better than that of patients who underwent other obesity treatments. 60% of patients showed significant weight loss 12 to 18 months after surgery. Only 6.3% of candidates experienced complications.
Mexico gastric sleeve surgery
With the Bariatrics MX method, most patients lose between 80% and 100% of their excess weight in the first two years after surgery. Our data show that weight loss is closely linked to post-operative diet, exercise and a healthy lifestyle.
We also observe a significant improvement and/or reduction in obesity-related comorbidities such as type II diabetes, hypertension, hypercholesterolemia and obstructive sleep apnea.
